Anonymous said: Hi, I saw your donation drive on AO3, and I'm wondering what the money is for, exactly? $70,000 seems like a /lot/ of money. Is there somewhere I can see a list of intended purposes? Thank you!
70,000 USD does seem like a lot, which is why many of our users may be surprised to find out that in 2015, the OTW will need 75,000 USD just to replace old servers and expand capacity! The OTW’s annual budget for 2014 is 221,863.44 USD, and 70% of that goes directly to servers, collation, and staff development for AO3. The remaining 30% of our 2014 budget funds Fanlore, Legal Advocacy, Open Doors, and Transformative Works and Cultures; covers administrative costs; allows for outreach and membership development (such as our thank you gifts and shipping); and provides opportunities for professional development and training for personnel. All of these things help the OTW protect and celebrate fans and fan culture.
I find it amazing that people think that’s a lot of money to ask. It’s incredibly expensive to fund such heavily used and non ad supported websites, and that before anyone even gets paid for their work. I am definitely donating what I can to this drive, and I hope if you have a few dollars spare and benefit from Archive of Our Own, or any of their projects you will consider dona ting as well.
We currently have 16365 fandoms, 418361 registered users, and 1330541 works. (x)
And it’s free of advertising, it’s non-commercial, it’s our haven and we can be certain that our fanworks don’t get banned or deleted or censored. AO3 has given a multinational fandom a platform, and, with the OfTW, a voice. So if you can spare a few dollars, do it!
I have a theory that the thing which really emphasises someone’s age is the first major news event they can remember watching on tv. For my toyboy boyfriend, it’s Princess Diana’s death. For me, it’s the Berlin Wall coming down.
Challenger explosion. While I remember some events before that day, that was really the start of my awareness of news and current events. I don’t remember why I was home, but I was, and I remember calling for my mom, because all I could say was “I think something went wrong.”
JFK assassination. *is old*
John Lennon’s death, apparently.
Watergate hearings. Because after-school cartoons weren’t on, day after day, and that annoyed me. (not that I got to watch cartoons every day after school anyway; mostly I think it was something my mom was paying attention to that Was Not Me, and that was worse.)
The fall of Saigon. I don’t know why, Viet Nam was on the news every night, but that’s what stuck. I remember watching helicopters landing on buildings to evacuate Americans.
Desert Storm, I think. I just remember my mom praying as she watched the news.
Challenger explosion for me too. I was in first grade, and we watched it at school, because there was a teacher on board and it was a big deal. All I really remember is all the teachers crying.
I am very young. First major news event I remember is the World Trade Center attack. I was seven and wanting dino-oatmeal for breakfast.
Mine is Princess Diana too. I was very young, maybe five or so, but I remember my mom watching it on the news for like a week straight
Desert Storm for me, too. I don’t remember details clearly, but I remember being fascinated with the whole thing and later discussing it at school some.
mine is Diana’s death too. I remember me and my sister telling the parentals cos we’d seen the news before they did. and being bemused by the public reaction.
What’s weird is that I remember the lead-up to the Challenger explosion, and being excited about a teacher going into space, but I don’t remember the crash itself. I know at least some of the classes at my school watched it on TV; one of my older brothers saw it. But I don’t know if I actually saw it myself.
9/11. I was five, but i remember it was my sister’s birthday party and i thought that the planes were crashing into the key bank tower in downtown cleveland.

don’t be fooled by the babe’s chill it took us like five minutes to put the blue ribbon on her bridle she definitely thought it would eat her. and then she was totally hamming it up for the camera. what a show-off. sadly you cannot see my show braids but they were HARD and I did like TWENTY of them and koko was v. patient and good. while we got her ready the night before she was out of her stall for like four hours standing around while we fussed with her tail and she had her hay in her stall and wanted to go to sleep but she was very patient and gooooooood I <3 babe.
she was also very good during showmanship class the only time she got nervous was when the judge went to touch her braids. she kinda skittered away like UM. EXCUSE ME. MOM WORKED VERY HARD ON THOSE DO NOT TOUCH. but the judge said that they were the best braids in the class so I was like !!! hopefully next show we can ride her and i know my sister wants to jump her too.
